McPherson is the county seat of McPherson County and one of central Kansas's most established small cities — laid out in the early 1870s, named for Union Civil War general James B. McPherson, and home today to about 14,000 people. It sits right on Interstate 135, the Wichita–Salina corridor, about 50–60 miles north of Wichita and roughly half an hour south of Salina, with US-56 running through town and K-61 — the four-lane route up from Hutchinson — feeding into I-135 just south of the city, an easy base for commuters and relocating families.

For a town its size, McPherson punches well above its weight economically. It's regularly described as one of the most industrialized small communities in the nation, with 50-plus industries anchored by the CHS oil refinery (a fixture here since the 1930s), a large Pfizer sterile-injectables plant (the former Hospira site, one of the area's biggest employers), Viega, and Johns Manville. A city-owned utility — the McPherson Board of Public Utilities — keeps electric rates among the lowest in Kansas, part of what's kept that employer base, and the housing demand it supports, remarkably steady.

The housing stock tells the town's history. Near the walkable historic core you'll find late-1800s Queen Anne Victorians and 1920s–30s bungalows; beyond it, mid-century neighborhoods (the typical McPherson home dates to the late 1960s) give way to newer subdivisions on the edges of town. Across the board, home prices in McPherson run well below the national average, which makes ownership unusually attainable here.

There's a real quality-of-life draw, too. Lakeside Park, on the western edge of town, draws families to its duck pond, log cabin, and bandshell, while 60-acre Wall Park adds ball fields, courts, disc golf, and a skate park around Wall Park Lake. Downtown is built around the restored 1888 McPherson Opera House, and the McPherson Museum holds everything from H.H. Nininger meteorites to an Ice-Age ground-sloth skeleton and a Birger Sandzén art collection. McPherson is also a college town: McPherson College (founded 1887) runs the only four-year automotive-restoration degree in the country — long championed by Jay Leno — and Central Christian College of Kansas calls the city home. Public schools are run by McPherson USD 418, whose McPherson High Bullpups are a point of local pride, and each May the city's All Schools Day — a tradition since 1914 — draws tens of thousands downtown.
